THE MAKING OF AN EXTRA-ORDINARY SERVICE TO IDSICAN

In the euphoria of celebration of IDSICAN 40th anniversary, we must never forget the sacrifice, enormous energy and personal financial commitment, the tenacity, doggedness, hopeful men who built the strong foundation of IDSICAN to make it a District to belong. They built IDSICAN from ordinary to extra-ordinary.

At the end of their agreed one-year tenure, they had to go one year more for a suitable successor. The calling and very demanding official responsibilities, personal, family and other demands made it unattractive yet they went through the pains to have unbroken tenure of office thereby serving another year more for continuity of IDSICAN, lifting the banner of IDSICAN to high heavens. These worthy men of integrity and ambassadors of IDSICAN, though all late, yet being posthumously celebrated:

Mr. Ben Agbode Arenyenka, FCA (Late)                         1982-1984

Mr. Christopher Adewunmi Ojeikere, FCA (Late)            1986-1988

Prince Gabriel Akomoh Ya’dua, FCA (Late)                    1990-1992

Otunba Samuel Olufemi Deru, FCA (ICAN PP) (Late)     1993-1995

Mr. Akinniyi Akinbowale, FCA (Late)                              1995-1997

Continuity for progress must have undoubtedly informed the Chairman then, PC Otunba Samuel Olufemi Deru FCA (ICAN PP) to fashion an IDSICAN Constitution that guide, regulate and clearly provide defined offices with a compass for seamlessly transiting from one-year tenure to the other. The new constitution enshrined many new offices. This brought stability in the administration of the very young IDSICAN. It was during his tenure also that the Insignia of office for sitting Chairman was launched.

Their extra-ordinary service was without cash or kind reward either directly or discreetly. Today, we present these icons of honour, indeed our extra-ordinary men, the trophy, the singing, the shouting, the clapping to these great men of IDSICAN.They deserve all the accolades. Indeed, “The memory of the just is blessed” Proverbs 10:7.

IDSICAN Take-Off Coverage Area

IDSICAN, at inauguration, has its territoryextended from Ikeja toAgege, Abule-Egba, Alimosho, Akowonjo, Isolo, Mushin, Ojo, Badagry, Agbara, Ilupeju, Anthony andYaba(Yaba College of Technology and University of Lagos inclusive). Other areas wereGbagada, Ketu, Ojota, Ojodu, Ikorodu as well as Ota in Ogun State. IDSICAN had given ‘birth’ to many new District Societies out of the coverage areas of IDSICAN.

Annual Dinner and Dance

The first Annual Dinner and Dance was held at the Lagos Airport Hotel on Thursday 2nd February, 1984, it was chaired by Prince Bola Ajibola, the then President of Nigerian Bar Association, later Attorney-General of the Federation and Judge of International Criminal Court at the Hague. The Guest Speaker was Chief Alani Oluwole Adeosun FCA, Past President of ICAN, a former Managing Director of First Bank of Nigeria Plc also a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at another time.

IDSICAN has since been consistently holding Annual Dinner and Dance as climax of its social activities for the year.

The Amazons of IDSICAN

The First Female Member of the District was Mrs. AtinukeAdebimpeBalogun, FCA. She Joined the District in 1985. She was very active, serving in different capacities and eventually she was elected the Vice Chairperson. Realizing how active she was, one could not be surprised at her mounting the exalted position as the First Lady President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

Mrs. MoronfoluAdeyinka Olowu-Fadeyibi, FCA was the first female Chairman in 1997, followed by Mrs. Comfort Olujumoke Eyitayo, FCA in 2002 – 2003, who is the Immediate Past President of our Institute.

Since then many more of these great women had joined the league of past Chairmen of IDSICAN:

Dr. (Mrs.) Shakirat Adepeju Babtunde, FCA                            2006 – 2007

Mrs. Wendy Garuba-Ayeni, FCA                                              2011 – 2012

Mrs. Morenikeji Dayo Olaiwole, FCA                                       2016 – 2017

Mrs. Rita Umani Akpan, FCA                                                 2020 – 2021

Mrs. TaibatAbeni Malomo, FCA                                              2021 – 2022

The non-discriminatory practice of IDSICAN made it to be the first District Society in ICAN that has a female chairman succeeded by another female chairman as could be seen in 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 which by coincidence happened at ICAN national within the same period.

Institution of Insignia of Office

In 1993, IDSICAN launched Insignia of office for Chairmen of the District. It was intended to distinguish the Chairman and the flag bearer of the District from other members in any social and professional event organized by the District.

The debut was later to be copied by other District Societies in ICAN family.

IDSICAN Constitution

The District, in 1993, inaugurated its Constitution guiding the administration, succession and activities of the District. The maiden constitution provided a 20-member executive committee assigned with specific portfolio. The Constitution, with the following highlights, provided the committee system to run its affairs:

Elected Members:

16 members elected (8 members each from Practice and Not-In-Practice)

Appointed Members:

3 Immediate Past IDSICAN Chairmen

1 ICAN Council Member (Residing or with principal place of business within IDSICAN area.

First Workshop for Businessmen

The first Workshop with theme “How to raise Finance for medium and small scale businesses from banks and capital market” was held in 1989. The speakers were Late Chief S. I Adegbite, the then Managing Director of Wema Bank Plc. And Chief B.O Fagbemi, the Chairman/Managing Director of Prudential Securities Limited and Prudential Finance Limited. The workshop went well and many were held afterwards through to date.

First Joint Retreat for Chartered Accountants

In 1991 IDSICAN co-organized a joint retreat for Chartered Accountants with a sister District, Lagos Mainland District Society at ASCON, Topo, Badagry. It brilliantly, extensively discussed and dissected at the retreat, the then newly promulgated and contentious Company and Allied Matters Decree (CAMA) 1990 making obnoxious provision that legal practitioners must sign audited financial statements. It gained prominence in the media space. The communiqué at the end of the retreat formed the fulcrum that led to the removal of the bizarre provision from CAMA 1990.

First IDSICAN Retreat

In 1992, IDSICAN organized a fee paying residential weekend lecture held at Plaza Hotel, Ota as part of re-tooling and re-sharpening of Chartered Accountants. As part of the advocacy programme of IDSICAN, courtesy visit was paid to Chief Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, in his Ota farm. This former military Head of State physically received the IDSICAN Chairman and members in person. Part of the distinguished and eminent personalities invited by PC Gabby Yadua, FCA the then Chairman, to grace the weekend event was the business mogul, distinguished Scotland Chartered Accountant, late Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola, FCA.

Interestingly, many people thought it was a mission impossible to have Chief Abiola attend the programme. As the evening of the day was about to set, behold, the arrival of Chief M.K.O. Abiola was heralded by clapping and shouting of M.K.O. In his characteristic humility, MKO had to explain why he came late. The tempo changed, press swarmed to catch a glimpse of him, photo journalists had a field day feasting on him and the press was a washed with this great event that day and in the print media, the following day.

This singular event gave IDSICAN a mileage in high rating in activities of the District Societies in ICAN family. So was the pervasive charisma of PC Yadua and his Executive Committee that put everything to achieve a huge success of that weekend retreat.

Inter District visits

Inter-District exchange visit were organized with sister District Societies. The first was between IDSICAN and Ibadan District Society. This was in year1998.

Business Luncheon

From mid-1980s, IDSICAN started to hold its quarterly business luncheon to attract members into its folds. Pep talks were given by prominent members of society over sumptuous lunch. This was consistently held at the Mandarin Chinese Hotel on Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja very close to Leventis Bus Stop. Members donate their company products like car tyres, foams etc for raffle draws. The proceeds of the raffledraw usually went to the IDSICAN account. Revenue from the Business luncheon was the District’s main stay then.

In year 2006, Two Business Luncheons were held. The 1st Business Luncheon titled “21st Century Challenges to a Successful Entrepreneurship” was held on Wednesday 2nd August 2006 at the Lagos Airport Hotel. It was chaired by ChiefOlubemiAremuAkindele, FCA the 4th Chairman of the District. The Guest Speaker was Mr. Folusho Phillips, FCA the 1st General Secretary of the District and the Special Guest of Honour was the 42nd President of ICAN, Dr. (Mrs.) C.G Okpareke, FCA.

The 2nd Business Luncheon was on “The Challenges of Transparency Initiatives in the Eradicationof Corruption in Nigeria”. It was chaired by Mr. Gabriel AkomohYadua FCA, the 6th Chairman of the District while the Guest Speaker was General Ishola Williams (Rtd), the Initiator of Transparency in Nigeria (TIN). The Special Guest of Honour was Major General SebastinOnwuama, (Rtd.), FCA, then, a Member of Council of the ICAN, who later became ICAN President.

Journey to IDSICAN Permanent Secretariat – IDSICAN HOUSE

After the inauguration of IDSICAN on Thursday, 12th August 1982, Guinness Nigeria Limited head office on Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja was the take-off secretariat of this infant District Society. For years, the IDSICAN was nourished there through the support of members working in the company. It later transferred its Secretariat to 7, Akinremi Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja, the practicing office of its 2nd Chairman, Late Mr. Emmanuel AdeyemoOgunlowo FCA and later moved with him to an apartment at his 29, Ogunlowo Street, Ikeja. These were donated free of charge by him.

The secretariat moved to Vitafoam Nigeria Limited with PC AkinniyiAkinbowale FCA, the then Commercial Director of the company, at no cost to IDSICAN. With the growth in membership and expanded secretarial duties to meet the need of its members, IDSICAN later relocated to a rented flat at 50, Olowu Street, Ikeja with full blown administrative structure.

It was from this rented apartment that it moved to its permanent and freehold property at 4, Araromi Street, Anifowose, Ikejawhich was inaugurated on 27th May, 2003 during the Chairmanship year of Mrs. Comfort OlujumokeEyitayo FCA. History was made as IDSICAN became the first District Society in ICAN family to have a freehold owned property located within its domain dedicated to the service of its members.

IDSICAN Property Title Perfection

The rigorous journey to the perfection of the title to the property went through many chairmanship years and was successfully completed in 2020.

 IDSICAN Building Facelift

At the acquisition of the IDSICAN House, the bungalow has a two-bedroom flat in the front with an old structure at the back. The second flat occupied by the District was renovated and tastefully furnished befitting the status of the Districtin 2003/2004 during the chairmanship year of Mr. Gbadura Saka FCA.

In 2005-2006, a one story building foundation was laid. The turning of the sod for the one story building was performed in 2008/2009 during the tenure of Mr. Isaac Olusoji Oladapo, FCA.

Through the focused and concerted efforts of the successive administrations, the building was completed and commissioned on 16 February, 2010 during the Chairmanship year of Mr. Chibuese Osuagwu FCA. In 2017/2018 year, the buildings were repainted. Yet in 2021/2022 year, the buildings witnessed another facelift to reflect new ICAN logo brand, rewiring and contained perennial flooding.

The Body of Past Chairmen

The Body of Past Chairmen (BOPC), as the name suggests, consists of eminent personalities that had served at various times as Chairmen of the Ikeja District Society of ICAN. This body of elder statesmen and women is to assist from their wealth of experience and having passed through the process themselves, render quality advice to the current Executive Members and the leadership of IDSICAN. The Body serves as a stabilising force to the District to ensure focus, honour, peace, harmony, equity and prosperity of its members.

Up to year 2005, the BOPC existed as a Committee of the District Society and chaired by the incumbent Chairman of the District.

However, on Tuesday, 31 October 2006 at a meeting held at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja, the Body of Past Chairmen, was properly and popularly inaugurated. The meeting was attended by 15 eminent personalities (11 Past Chairmen and 4 serving Executive Committee of the IDSICAN). This was for it to properly take its rightful position and carry out its functions which the then structure did not support.

At the meeting of that day, after speeches for the reasons of converging were given by PC Olutayo Phillips FCA (Past Chairman) and the then Chairman, Dr. (Mrs.) Shakirat Adepeju Babatunde FCA, the body of Past Chairmen cut its teeth. At the meeting, PC Prince Gabriel Akomoh Yadua FCA was unanimously elected as the substantive and pioneer Chairman, and the Secretary was PC Gbadura Saka FCA. BOPC holds its meetings regularly and has been assisting IDSICAN on the path of growth, honour and peace.

In 2015, the BOPC constitution was passed and PC Samuel OlufemiDeru FCA (ICAN PP) succeeded the pioneer Chairman, late PC Prince Gabby Yadua, FCA.  BOPC immediately opened and started operating its bank account.

Body of Past Chairmen launched Insignia of Service

In 2017/2018, the Body of Past Chairmen launched Insignia of Service for its members. Members wear this to occasions organized by IDSICAN. The insignia was later in 2021/2022 modernised to a moderate gold plated and esthetic badge depicting greater pictorial data of service by each member.

Catch Them Young Project

IDSICAN pioneered the “Catch them young” project in 2005/2006. This was basically taking the ‘gospel of accounting’ to students of secondary schools and projecting ICAN as the only brand for a secured future. The project sold Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) as multiple advantage to secondary school levers to keep them profitably engaged to a prosperous accounting career and guaranteed direct entry ticket to reputable Universities. It was financed wholly by IDSICAN. This project took IDSICAN team to as far as Christ the Redeemers’ College, Sagamu, Ogun State and as close asIfako International School, IjuAgege, Lagos State.

IDSICAN went to propagate ICAN in secondary schools, encouraging the students to pick up career in Accountancy and removing the “myth” associated with passing the ICAN examinations. This was a little flower that IDSICAN sowed through thinking out of the box that has now blossomed and become the household name in ICAN family today. This is one of the IDSICAN leadership foresight that continued to braze the trail in IDSICAN leadership in the comity of District Societies of ICAN.

Inauguration of Annual Publication of Calendar

In 2005/2006, IDSICAN printed glossy and colourful 12-month paged-calendar. This Calendar did not only display accurate days, dates and months of the year but visually displays the activities of the milestone events of the District. This innovation, pioneered by IDSICAN, was later to be copied by other District Societies.

Western Zonal Conference

In order to bring the Annual Accountants’ Conference nearer to members, give aura of annual conference held in Abuja and afford members who may not be able to attend for exigencies, the Institute, in addition to the main annual Abuja Conference, decentralized the event on Zonal basis: East, North and West.

In 2007/2008, during the tenure of the 20th Chairman, Mr. OluwoleOjeyinka FCA, the second Western Zonal Conference was held at Airport Hotel, Ikeja. IDSICAN was the host. PC OlufemiDeru FCA (ICAN PP) now late, was the Chairman of the Second Western Zonal Conference. The role of IDSICAN here was unique. It did not only deliver a successful Western Zonal Conference but actually revived and built bridges for the Western Zonal Conference continuity as it was inactive for few years after the maiden conference.

The idea of Western Zonal Chairmen Committee was muted by Ikeja. This was to strengthen the Zone, properly coordinate the Zonal Conferences for continuity, quality annual conference, exchange ideas, appoint Executive Committees, open a bank account and run the Western Zonal Chairmen Committee as an independent body. The secretariat was to be in Ibadan, being central to Districts in the West. PC OluwoleOjeyinka FCA, the convener, was voted the Protem Coordinator of the Body of Western Zone Chairmen, the position he relinquished to PC Isaac OlusojiOladapo FCA, the 21st IDSICAN Chairman, who succeeded him in office. PC Oladapo was elected the first Chairman of the Body of Western Zone Chairmen.

Diesel powered Generator

A diesel-powered 22kva generator was donated by the Chairman, Mrs. Taibat Abeni Malomo FCA to IDSICAN in 2022.

Vision and Mission Statements

IDSICAN Vision and Mission statements were unveiled by ICAN President Mrs. Comfort OluEyitayo FCA on her official visit to IDSICAN, her immediate constituency, on Friday, 22 April 2022.

Outdoor Investiture Ceremony

Traditionally, transiting from one chairmanship year to another or change of baton has always been held almost quietly at the District Secretariat with handful press coverage. IDSICAN, in its effort to pattern its activities after the national body made the change of baton with fanfare. The maiden event was held at the beginning of 2014/2015 chairmanship year of PC OluseyiOgunjobiat Airport Hotel, Ikeja Lagos. The event paraded who-is-who in the society. The District Past Chairmen, the President and Registrar/CE of ICAN were present. This yearly event was later to be copied by other District Societies of ICAN. The event has always been self-financing.

Monthly Members’ Forum

Prior to 2012/2013 Chairmanship year, only activities that put few members together werebusiness luncheon, workshops, courtesy visits and socials. There has not been regular forum of meeting structured solely and dedicated to attract large participation of members for re-learning the profession.

IDSICAN Executives in 2012/2013 during the tenure of PC Patrick Oluropo Sanni, FCA as Chairman thought out a platform for regular meetings called Monthly Members’ Forum which was designed in an attempt to help members improve their knowledge and capacity for self-employment in an economy of increasing rate of unemployment amongst Chartered Accountants. This, among others, led to the birth of the Monthly Members’ Forum.

Topical issues on dynamics of the profession, management, entrepreneurship, health etc. were lined up for egg heads, competent and outstanding professionals in relevant fields are always sourced to give lecture or practical demonstration in areas of chosen interest to members.

The ravaging COVID-19 could not kill this lofty initiative. IDSICAN seized the opportunity to transform the physical programme to virtual even as space posed a great challenge in post COVID-19 era. It is noteworthy that when Nigeria was practically locked down, IDSICAN members, in the comfort of their rooms, continue to benefit in the enhancement of their professional knowledge through this value laden programme to take them through post COVID-19 pandemic.

The single attendance increased from less than 200 at inception to now over 700. The monthly Members’ Forum woke ‘from slumber’, re-sharpened and re-tooled dormant members. Attendance are recognized by ICAN with two (2) credit hours as reward. Being a pacesetter’s District Innovation, it has been copied by other District Societies which was okay by us anyway.

IDSICAN Anniversaries

The District turned 25 in 2007. The Silver Jubilee was celebrated with fanfare. Mr. OluwoleOjeyinka FCA was the Chairman.

In 2012, IDSICAN turned 30. The anniversary was celebrated with fanfare. The Doyen of Accountancy in Africa, Mr. Akintola Williams, FCA graciously graced the occasion which was held at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja Lagos.

 Family Forum

In 2013/2014, the IDSICAN Executive Committee, led by Mr. Francis Egba FCA, expanded the social forum to accommodate family members of the District. Short lectures on family related topic and health were given. A separate forum created to cater for the interest of toddlers.

Games and raffles were part of the special one-day end of the year programme to give a complete fun.

It must be mentioned that some children of members, through the Family Forum, who had the opportunity to sit and freely interact with ICAN President and Past Chairmen, took interest in accountancy profession, wrote the qualifying examinations of the Institute and are now Chartered Accountants.

Apart from the fun of get-together, the Forum has successfully demystified the ‘myth’ wrongly associated with the difficulty in passing ICAN examinations.

 IDSICAN Cooperative Society

2016/2017 Chairmanship year of Mrs. Morenikeji Olaiwole, FCA IDSICAN inaugurated a Cooperative Society, novel in ICAN family. The purpose was to cater for the financial needs of members. The well managed Cooperative Society has since witnessed massive transformation which has comfortably taken a leap to the multi-millionaires’ club.

Take-Off Retreat for IDSICAN Executive Committee

Since 2020/2021 chairmanship year of Mrs. Rita Umani Akpan, FCA IDSICAN started organizing week-end retreats for the newly inaugurated Executive Committee members of the District. Papers are usually delivered on diverse but relevant areas like the culture of ICAN/IDSICAN, protocols, inter-relationships, setting and monitoring goals. The purpose is to sell the vision of the new Chairman to the Executive Committee for their inputs for a successful and accomplished year. Milestones were set as compass for the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee separately organises a one-day retreat for the Secretariat personnel to expose and prepare them ready for the task ahead.

Acquisition of Webcam

Covid-19 business disruption permanently changed the face of physical meetings in Nigeria. IDSICAN, in 2020/2021 acquired a Webcam to enable it hold its Executive Committee meetings and members’ forum seamlessly.

International Symposium

IDSICAN is the first District Society to organize a symposium beyond the shores of Nigeria. The District made its debut in 2021/2022 chairmanship year recording attendance over 300. Erudite speakers from local and diaspora were drawn to expose members to contemporary topics in the profession and beyond.

Sponsorship of Young Chartered Accountants

In 2021/2022, IDSICAN pioneered the sponsorship of young chartered accountant to ICAN Conference. The cost was bankrolled by a senior member of the District, Mrs. OluwakemiAgbekeAdeniran, FCA. The selection was done through a rigorous screening process that saw Miss Monisola Olajide, ACA emerged as the winner.

Courtesy Visits to Notable Places

With IDSICAN, there is no dull moment. Every Chairman always makes arrangement for advocacy to industry within its domain. Practically, there has not been any reputable company within its domain where it has not visited. The visit is to showcase the Institute and give its members sense of belonging. Issues pertaining to members’ welfare were discussed with decision makers and resolved to the benefit of members.

THOMAS AYOTINDE & CO.              DISTRIT CORDINATOR VISIT            ADROIT METERING SERVICES

The courtesy visit is taken to higher level during the visit of the sitting ICAN President. This enables the President to meet with high echelon of host Management on matters of mutual interest. It was the norm that the visiting President will visit three important places:
